The Super Bowl is one of the few events in the sports design calendar that I get to prepare for two weeks in advance, which is why it is one of my favorite events of the year.
Working for the Arizona Republic means that I cover every sports team in the state. This means that I often have to find a balance designing for two rival colleges Arizona State and the University of Arizona. For this design I was able to create a cohesive design style that fans of either teams could enjoy.
The 2021 Cardinals came out of the gate with some serious firepower. However due to injuries and just plain bad luck the second half of the season did not pack as much oomph. Though they still locked into their first playoff appearance in 7 years. My task was to create an engaging design for the preview of the their ultimate loss to the Super Bowl winning Rams.

This is a fun project to work on for me because it gives me a chance to connect with the community and the players get the same professional design treatment as the stars they look up to.
For a story about a golfer who had been winning all over the globe all I could think about while brainstorming was the old Indiana Jones travel montage scenes. This design ran in both Palm Springs and Phoenix which is where Jon Rahm went to college.
Often times visual storytelling involves learning about topics that I previously had little knowledge of. This project about the tennis greats and where Roger Federer falls among them was no exception.
